Schloss in German (we've heard) means 'castle'. Friends told us about this great hike to a towering rock outcropping. It must have reminded some German speaker of a fortress, two rock towers (now connected by a bridge), because that is what it is now called. Saturday we headed north on 42 for about an hour right to the line of WVa. Beautiful drive! As soon as we saw the 'Welcome to West Virginia' sign we pulled into a little parking lot and campground, strapped on our baby and our backpack and began the ascent. The day was misty and became mistier and breezier as we went. Eventually we ran into a little dripping rain. Talk about a great Fall adventure! Lovely. The path was steep, leveling out to wind along the ridge for a while as the mist blew across our path. Finally, we hiked one more small incline to the lookout.
No lookout. The mist completely surrounded us. O well. We'll have to hike it again. It was well worth it.
When we got back to the car we decided to drive down into WVa. Eventually we found our way to 259 and drove all the way home. Great way to spend Saturday!
